Art-Tech for Humanity: The Vatican plans to use Blockchain to “democratize art”

Through a partnership with the VR art-tech startup Sensorium, the Vatican plans to let a truly global audience access artworks, manuscripts and more via emerging NFT technology

The initiative, spearheaded by the Vatican-led NGO tasked with bridging together technological development and human progress, seeks to make a broad array of some of the world’s most prized artwork available for the viewing pleasure of millions.

As the global push for digitization onboards more and more physical assets into the virtual world, the advantages afforded to objects such as artworks, literary relics and more in terms of accessibility and preservation have made even the most venerable of institutions take notice.

The Vatican Museum, established in the 16th century, includes over 800 unique pieces of art that range from the master-crafted work of the old Renaissance Masters to those of modern visionaries such as Vincent Van Gogh.

The partnership with Sensorium plans to leverage art-tech in the form of VR headsets and digitized NFTs to allow for anyone with the required equipment to enjoy the artworks from the comfort of their own home.

In a press release, Sensorium stated that:

The hope for the public-private partnership is to allow the development of NFT-gallery accessible in VR and desktop and featuring renowned masterpieces from the Vatican’s collection.

According to the same press release, the Chairman of Humanity 2.0 Father Philp Larrey noted that

We (Humanity 2.0) look forward to working with Sensorium to explore ways to democratize art, making it more widely available to people around the world regardless of their socio-economic and geographical limitations. The partnership with Sensorium brings this goal a step further and equips us with the latest tech solutions.
