US national security advisers are gathering officials from over 30 countries to discuss cyber and crypto security

Last Friday US president Joe Biden has announced plans to meet with officials from 30 countries to discuss international cooperation regarding cyber security. Subjects of concern will be the recent rise of ransomware and the illicit use of cryptocurrencies. One set goal will be the improvement of law enforcement collaboration across borders. The list of countries includes NATO allies as well as the G7 partners.

This announcement follows a series of menaces accumulating over the past year, including direct attacks on US energy and food supplies. Gangs based in Eastern Europe attacked meat and gas producers who were forced to pay multimillion-dollar ransoms in Bitcoin to continue their operations. The attackers are yet to be held accountable. However, crimes like this are not the only focus, as concerns over money laundering persist.

Another concern is “malicious cyber activity” originating from China. Beijing has so far denied all charges.

When and where the meeting will take place is not yet clear.
