The integration of Web3 in sports has become a trend in recent years. Many sports clubs and teams worldwide have partnered with various blockchain and Web3 firms to tap the technology for better fan engagement and as an additional revenue stream.

In an interview with AIBC News, professional basketball players Chris Newsome, Jared Dillinger, and Gabe Norwood discussed the growing role of technology in sports. As key figures in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), they provided insights into how technologies such as Web3 and blockchain can transform the industry.

Technological advancements in sports

Chris Newsome of Meralco Bolts highlighted the applications of technology in sports. “New technology being integrated into sports is a great thing,” he remarked. Newsome emphasised how technology can enhance recovery, stats, analytics, and viewership experience. “The future of it has many possibilities. We are just scratching the surface now,” he added.

Jared Dillinger of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel addressed the challenges of integrating new technologies within traditional frameworks. “We support Metaverse, crypto, and general technology, but the people in charge are still old school,” he explained. Dillinger discussed the difficulties in convincing the league’s management to adopt these innovations. Despite these hurdles, he remains optimistic, stating, “We’re going to continue to do that. We are just beginning to build out crypto and technology.”

Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine, meanwhile, shared his vision for the future of sports with Web3, blockchain, and crypto technologies. He sees these advancements becoming a routine part of sports, from how games are viewed and experienced to how players learn and teach the game. “I think it’s going to be embedded in everything we do. We are fathers, and we want our children to maximise their opportunities and talents through technology,” Norwood said.

Blockchain and NFTs in Philippine sports

The adoption of blockchain and NFTs in the Philippines also plays a part in the integration of these technologies in the sports industry. Newsome acknowledged that while the country is beginning to embrace these technologies, widespread understanding and access are still developing. “Education is a big part of that. For us to expand in this country as far as Web3 goes and sports, people need to be more educated about it,” he noted.

The role of technology in enhancing fan experience

All three players agreed on the significant role technology plays in enhancing fan experiences. Dillinger emphasised creating new experiences for fans, allowing them to engage with the sport in novel ways. “In sports, it’s always about the fans, the community, and I think with this technology, generating experiences like having someone come to the game and come to the dugout, or be part of a practice session with us, is crucial,” he explained.

Norwood added that the personal aspect of sports must not be lost amidst technological advancements. “As much as it is tech-driven, it is still a very personable experience. It’s just being enhanced by the tech,” he said.

Advice for aspiring athletes

The players also shared advice for aspiring young athletes. Norwood emphasised the importance of surrounding oneself with good people and competitors who push for excellence. “Iron sharpens iron. If you want to be great, you have to surround yourself with great people,” he advised.

Dillinger highlighted the dedication and hard work required to succeed as a professional athlete. “Imagine not loving the sport that you’re doing and you’re training three times a day for 15 years straight. That’s the type of work you would have to put in just to give you a chance to make it to the next level,” he explained.

Newsome encouraged young athletes to enjoy the process, as it helps build character and resilience. “It’s through that process, that daily grind, that you’re really going to find out who you are as a person,” he shared.

The discussion at AIBC Asia underscored the transformative potential of technology in sports, as well as the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. As advocates for technological integration, Newsome, Dillinger, and Norwood are helping shape the future of Philippine basketball and inspiring the next generation of athletes to embrace innovation and hard work.
