Smart Contracts, it turns out, are neither smart nor contracts! But they are playing an increasingly significant role in the public sector in the UAE and beyond. If you’re a lawyer working in this field, understanding smart contracts is an increasingly critical knowledge base

Medha Parlikar, CasperLabs CTO and co-founder, and Irina Heaver, a leading fintech and crypto lawyer, will lead a live, in-person workshop at the upcoming AIBC UAE – Dubai summit, which runs on the 25th and 26th of May at the Intercontinental Festival City Dubai.

The CasperLabs workshop will highlight the growing number of smart contract use cases being used in practice, and address knowledge gaps that will have actual practical applications; showing in real life examples of how smart contracts can automate Supply Chain and make life so much easier for lawyers.

A lawyer’s ability to know how a smart contract works, including key legal and technical questions to ask at the outset of a deployment, will make the difference between drastically improved processes, or a regulatory nightmare.

Government blockchain strategies

The UAE government has made clear its commitment to becoming a blockchain-based government, launching the Emirates Blockchain Strategy and Dubai Blockchain Strategy. Goals include Dubai becoming the first city fully powered by Blockchain. The strategy will use three strategic pillars: government efficiency, industry creation, and international leadership – but is there enough knowledge on the ground to facilitate this technology implementation?

During the course of the workshop each lawyer will create their own use case for their own department, with the best use case to be awarded a prize.

Meet Medha Parlikar

Medha Parlikar is CTO and co-founder at CasperLabs, the development team that originally launched the Casper Network. Casper offers a more secure, scalable and decentralized blockchain platform for the growing number of enterprises building in blockchain environments. She started working with technology in the early 80’s, building computers in the basement. For the past two decades, she has been delivering production SaaS software for large companies like Adobe, Omniture and Avalara. Her strengths are building high functioning technical teams, and inspiring them to deliver solutions that solve customer problems.

According to Medha,

Smart contracts are being recognized as a popular technology, yet their inner workings remain elusive to both non-technical (and many technical!) audiences. As more public sector and enterprise organizations deploy smart contracts, it’s critical that the legal community has a baseline understanding of how they work, and key legal considerations that should be made throughout the process.

Meet Dr. Irina Heaver

Dr. Irina Heaver is a leading cryptocurrency and blockchain lawyer based in Dubai and Switzerland. With over 17 years of experience gained as a Partner in a law firm and in-house as a regional General Counsel, she advised on over 500 billion USD worth of projects and transactions in the oil & gas, mining, construction, maritime, and technology sectors.

Throughout her career, Irina consulted multiple governments and regulators on policies surrounding Emerging Technology and drafted crypto-related laws and regulations.

Speaking to AIBC News Dr. Irina Heaver said,

Lawyers are notorious for being the last to implement technology in their operations. However, their clients, be they internal or external, are asking for more.

“They’re asking for more efficiency, quicker turn arounds, and lower overall costs. That’s where smart contracts can really be helpful. But the process starts with education, that is why I am delighted that the leading CTO in the space found the time in her busy schedule to be with us in Dubai and give this live training to my fellow Dubai lawyers.
