Dubai International Airport trials iris scanners for passport identification
“In light of COVID-19, the biometric path will provide a contactless experience while travelling without fear of touching any surfaces. Just show your face to the gates and you are all set for your flight” – General Director assistant of Ports Affairs in GDRFA-Dubai
Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA-Dubai) has launched a new fast-track passport control service that uses face and iris-recognition technologies.
Amid the COVID pandemic the UAE worked on its latest artificial Intelligence Program to help curb the spread through contact-less technology. This program started being offered to all passengers last month. These scanners aim to replace the need for paper tickets or phone apps.
The Dubai airport website explained ‘Simply place your passport’s photo page on the scanner, step into the gate, complete the eye scan and step through the gate. It takes a matter of seconds.’
The new biometric systems involves 122 smart gates at arrival and departure.
Major Gen. Obaid Mehayer Bin Suroor, deputy director of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs said “The future is coming now, all the procedures have become ‘smart,’ around five to six seconds.”
“All these initiatives are in line with the government’s vision to be a world leader in innovation and public services. It will ultimately improve the traveler experience at the airport, and enhance the efficiency of our operations.”
Your flight awaits in 4 easy steps:
- Step 1, register: Register through a smart tunnel system.
- Step 2, immigration: Once passengers register the smart tunnel system on their boarding passed they can simply walk through the smart tunnel which is a long pathway fitted with a biometric scanner by showing their face to the camera.
- Step 3, lounge facilities access: The biometric service is also available for first and business class passengers.
- Step 4, final boarding: Passengers are able to use the same mechanism at boarding gates without the need to show travel documents.
Dubai Airports that will allow travelers to walk through the airport touchpoints by just showing their faces without showing their travel documents.
