Hunter Biden, son of former US President Joe Biden, has announced that $LAPTOP, a memecoin based on the controversy surrounding the laptop associated with him, is scheduled to launch on 9 September 2026, on Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer 2 network, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The token is planned to have a 1 billion supply, with allocations for the founding team, airdrops, liquidity and other expenses. The project also includes a mechanism that could reduce the token supply under specified conditions.

According to reports, Hunter Biden and other founders are set to receive 30 per cent of the supply, while 20 per cent is allocated for airdrops. Additional tokens are reserved for liquidity, exchange listings, and legal or operational costs. Up to 30 per cent of the supply is linked to conditional token burns. Biden promoted the project on X with a video referencing media coverage of the laptop controversy.

Why token is named $LAPTOP

The laptop that Hunter Biden allegedly left in a Delaware repair shop in 2019 is referenced in the token’s name. Before the 2020 presidential election, the gadget later became the subject of a significant political dispute. Instead of portraying the initiative as a traditional technological endeavour, Biden strengthened the link by sharing a film created from media coverage of the laptop.

Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain developed by Coinbase. However, Coinbase has not endorsed, sponsored, or approved the token. As discussion around the project spread online, Base executive Jordan Fish, known as Cobie, noted that anyone can launch a token on Base without Coinbase’s approval.

$LAPTOP tokenomics explained

Several allocations within the 1-billion-token supply are described in the published tokenomics. Hunter Biden and the other founders are anticipated to receive 30 per cent, or 300 million tokens. The entire allotment won’t be able to access the market right away because those tokens will reportedly be locked for six months and released gradually during a two-year vesting period. A vesting schedule does not, however, completely remove risk. Although it would lessen one source of selling pressure, there are still more significant hazards.

About 200 million tokens, or 20 per cent of the total supply, are set aside for airdrops. According to reports, the distribution would go to people who share the political and cryptocurrency themes of the project.

The first distribution round is expected to include people whose wallets recorded losses on US President Donald Trump‘s $TRUMP memecoin, as well as subscribers to Hunter Biden’s Substack and to a mailing list linked to video journalist Andrew Callaghan.

However, obtaining tokens for free does not ensure that their worth will endure. Some receivers might decide to sell right away, especially if they don’t have anything to do with the project. If the token’s price increases after launch, that can lead to more selling pressure.

Planned $LAPTOP token-burning mechanism

One of the more unusual, reported features of $LAPTOP is a conditional burn mechanism. Up to 30 per cent of the total supply could be destroyed if specific political and market conditions are met. Reported triggers include a Democratic victory in the 2028 presidential election, Bitcoin reaching a new all-time high, and $LAPTOP achieving a fully diluted valuation higher than $TRUMP.

In cryptocurrency markets, token burning is a popular idea. If demand stays the same or increases, cutting supply may make something scarcer. Lower supply, however, does not provide value on its own. Whether the project retains enough focus and demand to support a reduced supply and have a significant impact will determine the burn mechanism’s impact.

Hunter Biden’s growing interest in cryptocurrency

The $LAPTOP launch does not appear to be Hunter Biden’s first public engagement with cryptocurrency. In recent months, he has spoken increasingly about digital assets and blockchain technology. In a June social media post, he described decentralized digital currency and blockchain as the “inevitable future.” In another exchange, he named Hyperliquid when asked about cryptocurrency. He has also expressed support for digital art, Bitcoin and blockchain-based ownership.

That activity helps explain the timing of the launch. Biden has expanded his public presence through X, a Substack newsletter, podcasts and interviews, building an audience that could overlap with a potential crypto community. Unlike a typical celebrity-linked memecoin, $LAPTOP is tied to a political story that many people already recognize.

Rise and fall of $TRUMP and $MELANIA

According to CoinMarketCap data, $MELANIA is currently trading at about $0.116, more than 99 per cent below its top of $13.73 in January 2025. $TRUMP was almost 97 per cent off its record valuation, according to CoinDesk.

These numbers show the volatility frequently observed in political memecoins, but they do not forecast how $LAPTOP will perform. Rapid increases can be fuelled by strong launch excitement, but if demand wanes, prices can drop just as fast. The performance of previous political tokens, in the opinion of many observers, emphasizes the dangers associated with this class of cryptocurrency.

The timing of the launch has drawn additional attention because Hunter Biden has recently discussed the possibility of running for president in 2028. During a radio interview with billionaire John Catsimatidis, Biden reportedly said he had not decided whether to run but suggested he could consider it if he received Catsimatidis’ endorsement. That does not mean $LAPTOP is connected to a political campaign, nor does it indicate that the token serves as a fundraising vehicle.
