Dr. Ian Gauci

Managing & founding Partner GTG Advocates, Afilexion. Advisor for Government, industry and various Authorities including Malta Financial Services Authority & Malta Digital Innovation Authority. Goal-driven and with a keen interest in technology, Blockchain, DLT,Robolaw, Big Data, AI, Fintech and RegTech. Founding member of the Maltese IT Lawyers Association & Blockchain Malta. Member of International Masters of Gaming Lawyers (IMGL). Ian also advises Authorities and crypto industry players on AML/FATF compliance. He works predominantly on technology related issues in particular, E Commerce, Cyber Law, Data Protection, GDPR, Gaming, Telecommunications and IT. He also works extensively in issues dealing with Competition Law and Consumer Legislation and lectures Legal Futures and Technology Law & Blockchain to LLB/LLD & Masters as well as in the LLM and Blockchain Masters Course. He is also a tutor, examiner and supervisor for students submitting their dissertations in these courses and an international speaker.

He studied at the University of Malta, obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA), then obtained a doctorate in law.

Started his career at Malta Communications Authority as Policy and Legal Advisor. This company is the statutory body responsible for the regulation of electronic communications (telecommunications, radiocommunications, and broadcasting transmission), eCommerce, and the postal sectors. Then, in the same company, he was an External Advisor Ecommerce Strategy for four months.

 

Then, he was for one year a legal expert for the National Blockchain Strategic Task Force within the Office of the Prime Minister at the Government of Malta. He has assisted the Maltese Government others on issues dealing with E-Trust certification, the Malta Communications Authority (MCA) on its E-commerce strategy as well as the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA).

 

Moreover, he was General Member at the International Masters of Gaming Law for two years.

IMGL is a not for profit association comprising over 340 members globally. Its members are recognized as the leading experts in their jurisdictions and are involved in most material gambling sector developments and issues worldwide.

In addition, he is a founding partner for four years at Afilexion Alliance. It is offering one of the most comprehensive advisory and support services portfolios for gaming regulators and lawmakers, gaming operators, gaming platform providers, affiliates, and service providers to the gaming industry.

 

Dr Gauci also provides consultancy on legal matters related to blockchain technology, smart contracts, crypto-currencies and ICO/ITO.

He has co-authored the Maltese Electronic Communications Framework and lectures Legal Futures and Technology at the University of Malta since ten years.

 

Currently, for sixteen years he is a managing partner and partner technology law at GTG Advocates.
