Twitter pilots ‘Shop Module’ for US customers

If all goes to plan, Twitter will soon give users the option to shop online from their profiles directly from the platform

Social media giant Twitter has started testing out e-commerce potential on its platform for the very first time. The new service will allow people to purchase products and services through Twitter directly.

This new shop module will allow users to discover products within the Twitter app. The shop module has just launched in the US as a trial and is streamlined and conducive to long-term sales.

TwitterSo far gaming retailer GameStop and travel brand Arden Cove are the two brands available. This new feature will soon become viable to around 10 other brands some of which include lifestyle, gaming, media, entertainment, and tech.

Interested customers can click on the product’s card showcasing the product’s name, image, and price and buy directly from Twitter. The new service also gives customers the option to reach out to companies directly for help with purchases.

Earlier this year at Twitter’s Analyst Day presentation which took place in February, Revenue Lead Bruce Falak had given an indication about this new feature.

“We’re starting to explore ways to better support commerce on Twitter. We know people come to Twitter to interact with brands and discuss their favorite products. In fact, you may have even noticed some businesses already developing creative ways to enable sales on our platform.

“This demand gives us confidence in the power of combining real-time conversation with an engaged and intentional audience. Imagine easily discovered, and quickly purchased, a new skincare product or trendy sneaker from a brand you follow with only a few clicks,”

At the moment only businesses with a professional Profile will be able to use this feature. If this rollout does well, we’ll soon be able to see the same implementation for small business pages. Twitter had always been a great method of attracting and converting customers but if this Shop Module is a success it will become even more useful.
